What are the effects of caffeine on dieting? I have to have my one cup of coffee in the morning. Is that going to severely hinder weight loss for me. I drink water the rest of the day and eat healthy and exercise.

jonnes32 replied: "It shouldn't, sometimes coffee can upset your stomach and make you go both ways (if you know what I'm saying) And that's one way people lose weight...by taking laxatives, so It would actually help. And it will cause you to have to drink more water to stay hydrated, so you will drink more and that will fill you up."

Dr. Souc replied: "No not at all! One cup is fine."

Alucard replied: "I use caffeine to wake up and caffeine to work out. unless you are sensitive to it it should not hurt or hinder your weight loss."

Corey H replied: "No. It's not a bad idea to have a cup of coffee about 1/2 an hour before exercise, because that will help you with your workouts, and can stimulate thermogenesis(fat burning), but coffee is also a central nervous system stimulant which can cause a hi and low crash-effect, and coffee can actually cause weight gain if it's consumed too often, beause it negatively effects thyroid hormones."

why are we advised to have less caffeine when dieting? i thought it stimulated the metabolism and was actually a good appetite suppressant.

elizabeth replied: "caffeine dehydrates you"

No M replied: "Caffeine dehydrates you, and most diets have an exercise content thus usually require you to drink plenty water (Hydration). This removes the toxins from your body. If you are in a weight loss scheme with a good diet and exercise talk to your health store or trainer about thermogenics. They will keep you awake on even the most boring days."

Ken replied: "Actually caffeine makes you more hungry. That is why it is used in many food products. It makes you want mire and not just caffeine."

Doc replied: "The caffeine stimulates the production of adrenaline, adrenaline is released to assist the body's reaction to a "fight or flight" situation. It is a throwback to our caveman days that can still be triggered by stress situations or stimulants. It has several effects, of which is to divert blood form "secondary" areas such as the digestive system and pump it to areas primarily involved in flight or fight, such as the muscles, heart and lungs. Digestion is slowed hindering absorption of nutrients and suppressing appetite. Blood glucose levels climb rapidly to ensure that muscles have plenty of fuel to flee or fight when the levels rise to high insulin is produced. The rapid rise is followed by a significant drop that triggers a demand for more energy - so you experience hunger with the possibility of blowing you diet. I hope that helped William J. What is the best NON CAFFEINE diet aid? I've been putting on weight even though I exercise and eat well, but I can't have caffeine due to a medical condition. Most diet aids out there all say "equivalent to five cups of coffee" or have hoodia, another bad one, so I'm wondering if there are any non caffeinated diet aids that you know of that might work well? I think I just need the boost. Thanks!

Laurus Nobilis replied: "Ephedra if you don't care about the law, and apple cider vinegar (or just vinegar in general) if you do. Vinegar is not overly helpful but it has been shown to slow absorption of carbohydrates in the diet so it could theoretically have some effect."

Is Diet Pepsi Caffeine free okay for diabetics or does it still contain caffeine? I was thinking of an option as a treat hear and there as a drink. I saw caffeine free diet pepsi in walmart and wondered if it was okay for a type II diabetic trying to keep blood sugar under control. I know caffeine is bad for diabetics so I wondered if this product still contained small amounts of caffeine or if it was truly caffeine free?

MamaSmurf replied: "Yes, it's okay as long as you drink lots of water too. Look on the label, they cannot label something caffeine free if it isn't anymore."

Lisa A replied: "Why is caffeine bad for diabetics? There is no sugar in it. Either you have been misinformed or who ever told you this did not know what they were talking about. If a food says it is caffeine free, it has to be caffeine free. Caffeine is a stimulant that has absolutely nothing to do with blood sugar. A person with diabetes mellitus has to limit their intake of carbohydrate or simple sugar. The reason for this is that either the insulin they produce is not effective at keeping blood sugars within normal limits. Or the islet cells contained in the pancreas cannot make enough insulin to do the job of metabolizing sugar. Either way this has nothing to do with caffeine. A physician may order a person to limit their caffeine intake due to problems related to diabetes such as vessel disease, but diabetes in general is no reason to decrease caffeine intake."

Michael S replied: "Sort of doubt Mazher's credibility on this. It seems to me if Aspartame were that bad they would take it off the market. I know Decaf coffee has 3% as much caffeine as regular coffee, so you are getting a small amount. Apparently according to this there is no caffeine at all in Caffeine Free Diet Coke. Diet Pepsi is probably the same. "

Stevie G replied: "I remember talking to someone about this. Cafine free doesn't mean cafine free, it means there is only a very limited amount in it, the same way alcohol free lager contains a small amount of alcohol. The cafine amount isnt very much at all, although it is still there, which is why it tastes like it is missing something, because it is there, but not very much off it. If you drink plenty of water you will be fine."

sue replied: "Caffeine is only bad for some people with an allergy to it. It is not necessarily bad for diabetics. It may raise blood PRESSURE a bit, but mostly that is the hot drink that does that. It does not raise blood GLUCOSE levels. In fact it may have some effect in lowering them. The studies are really very inconclusive on this. One says caffeine is bad for diabetics and another recommends having caffeine regularly. Caffeine is used to treat MIGRAINEs!! Caffeine Free products are just that!! free of any caffeine!!! Or they couldn't be labeled that by law."

Daisee replied: "To Lisa A: She's right. Caffeine RAISES blood sugar."
